Which meanings, approaches and ideas emerge if we observe art from different theoretical perspectives? What are possible methods to analyze works from different times and spheres and to embed them in a context? How can we connect the historical, social, political, material (and much more!) to interpret art?
This program is an attempt to introduce-involve-implement methods and perspectives of (critical) art theory in the context and discourse of the contemporary scene in Nepal. With selected texts and various art works of any medium we will explore and discuss over several sessions the possibilities of approaches like iconography/iconology, reception aesthetics/observer theory, hermeneutic methods and critical theory.
The course is basic and any needed literature and knowledge will be provided before every session. This program aims to support artists, curators, writers and anybody related to art (in any way) to understand, present and build references for historical and contemporary works with a diverse set of tools.
The course happens twice a month, Saturdays are proposed, but this can be discussed within the group in the first session. There will be a minimum fee per class to cover the costs of utilities, snacks/drinks and a final certificate provided by Kaalo.101. If somebody is interested to join, but cannot pay the fee, the project is willing to support individuals.
Please send us a message if you are interested or have any questions.
