Thousands of commuters and vehicles were stranded as a bridge at Gaindakot section of the East-West Highway collapsed on Monday evening, blocking the traffic movement completely.
The 32-meter long bridge over the Jayashree stream along the highway collapsed at around 6 pm on Monday.
Scores of vehicles heading toward different parts of the country have been stuck on both sides of the bridge since the last 15 hours.
Gaindakot Area Police Office Inspector, Prem Joshi expressed confidence that vehicular movement could resume by Tuesday evening. He informed that police personnel have been mobilized to manage the stranded traffic along the road.
According to the police, excessive traffic movement along the bridge is the reason behind the collapse. Two tippers and a truck were crossing the bridge at the time when the incident occurred.
According to Bishnu Khanal, an Engineer at Butwal-based Road Division Office, they are working to resume traffic movement after installing temporary diversions at the stream.
