Tension ran high in the Kaski-based Pokhara University (PU) after teachers and staff staged demonstrations, protesting the PU’s decision not to renew their contract.
The staff have claimed that the PU ended their contracts without prior notice.
A meeting of the Executive Council of the University on September 18 terminated contracts of 80 teachers and six non-teaching staff.
The agitating staff also vandalised departments of the university on Sunday.
According to Yuvaraj Tripathi, Chairman of the Contract Teachers Association, the staff resorted to vandalism after police personnel intervened in their peaceful demonstration.
Vice-Chancellor of the University Khagendra Bhattarai, however, said that the staff were removed as per the rules and regulation of the University. He further added that the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has directed the University to recruit new staff and renew old contracts only following due procedures.
Police personnel have been deployed in and outside the University to avert any untoward incident.
