Sukumbasis file over 800,000 applications to acquire land

Sukumbasi (squatters/landless/homeless/unmanaged) people of 72 districts have filed more than 800,000 applications at Sukumbasi Problems Resolution Commission demanding land.

Except in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, the Sukumbasis have filed 861,317 applications at the Commission. Among them, 72,627 are homeless and 569,217 are unmanaged, according to the Commission on Monday, December 1, 2014.

On regional basis, most of the applications have been received in mid-west region (198,178). Likewise, the lowest number of applications was received in western region (142,870).

On district-basis, most of the applications were filed in Kailali district (111,091), while Manang received the minimum number of applications (71).

After the formation of government under the leadership of Sushil Koirala, the Commission was established on June 16, 2014. It is chaired by Sharada Prasad Subedi.

On August 21, 2014, district-level offices of the Commission were set up in 72 districts. Each district office is comprised of a chairperson and two members.
