Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of the Nepal Police has stepped up special drive to destroy marijuana plantation in Udayapur, Makawanpur and Dhading districts.
Joint squads from NCB and police personnel have mapped new plantation prone hubs in the districts and are trying to identify the owners of marijuana farms. “So far we have destroyed marijuana plantation in 65 bigha in the last six days,” said DIG Keshari Raj Ghimire, chief of NCB. In other districts too, police have started destroying marijuana plantation.
NCB plans to destroy marijuana plants before they are ready to be sent to the market. In the next 45- 60 days, we will completely destroy the illegal plantation in these districts, said Ghimire.
Marijuana is illegally cultivated in thousands of ropanis in the remote villages, so it might take some time to destroy them all, according to the NCB.
“We will leave no stone unturned to contain illegal cultivation of marijuana across the country,” said the police.
A few weeks ago, the drug enforcement unit of the police in Siraha district destroyed marijuana plantation in 16 bighas of land in 19 different VDCs. Farmers had illegally cultivated marijuana as mixed crop with pulses and sugarcane to avoid police scrutiny.
Ministry of Home Affairs has planned to engage farmers in cultivation of alternative crops, NCB officials said. Despite the special drive to curb illegal plantation, police have not been able to nab owners or kingpins of the illegal marijuana plantations.
