Police have arrested four persons in possession of four kg yellow metal being smuggled in to the Capital from Khasa of Tibet.
With their arrest, a new modus operandi for gold smuggling has come to the light. The four had wrapped four gold bars each in condoms and hidden in their anus.
Acting on a tip-off, a team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Hanumandhoka intercepted a vehicle coming from the Nepal-China border area at Sallaghari of Bhaktapur, and detained four persons – Bharat Karki (29) of Ramechhap, Laxman Karki (33) of Ramechhap, Sunil Kumar Khadka (34) of Dolakha, and Ishwar Basent (32) of Thapathali, Kathmandu—on board it yesterday afternoon.
They were then taken to the Maharajgunj-based Nepal Police Hospital for check-up where X-ray revealed that they had hidden gold bars in their anus, police said.
Sixteen bars weighed 4.0016 kg in total. The haul costs more than Rs 17.3 million in local market.
Police impounded the vehicle and its driver, identified as Subhas Raut (19) of Sindhupalchok, also for interrogation.
They have been sent to the Revenue Investigation Department for further action.
