School shut as mass hysteria haunts students

A school in Pakarbas of Ramechhap district has been closed since a week after some girl students of the school started falling unconscious all of a sudden.

Prayageshwor Higher Secondary School has been shut down since last Monday as the students experienced symptoms of mass hysteria, said Om Prakash Shrestha, In-charge of Pakarbas Health Post.

“They weep, shout, stammer and attack their friends,” said Krishna Prasad Dhungel, a teacher. “And they fall unconscious.”

According to Chandra Prakash Gautam, principal of the school, at least 13 students fell unconscious on December 12, and frequently on a couple of days after that.

“Then we called physicians from Pakarbas Health Post and had their check up. But they failed to cure them.” Said Gautam, “This forced us to close the school.”
