Phewa Lake to get lost in 39 years!

Phewa Lake will get completely covered in next 39 years if not looked after, experts said.

At a programme organised by Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City (PSMC) and Kaski District Development Committee (DDC), stakeholders have expressed their serious concern over conservation of the one of the most popular tourist destinations of the nation.

Speaking at the function, Secretary of Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD) Somlal Subedi said immediate measures should be taken for the lake’s conservation.

“Phewa Lake will lose its existence in upcoming 39 years” he said, “if human encroachment and pollution are not controlled.”

Speaking at the programme, Prof Dr Krishna KC said that only five square kilometer area of the lake is covered by water currently.

It used to be 10 square kilometre in early 1960s, according to KC.

Human encroachment and garbage swept away from the source have been blamed for pollution in the Lake.

Yearly 142,000 tonnes of clay and stone are swept into the Lake from the source, KC said.

Increase of Chloroform and hyacinth and decrement of purity of water have been alarmingly increasing ever, he added.

Meanwhile, the experts also suggested making environment-friendly plans, practicing organic agriculture and developing gardens for conservation of the natural heritage.

They also urged concerned government authorities to work for the same.

Kaski Chief District Officer Krishna Bahadur raut, Local Development Officer Taranath Adhikari, PSMC former mayor Krishna Thapa and other officials had shared their ideas for the Lake’s conservation. –
