Nepal register historic victory over UAE

Nepal created another history by registering their first-ever victory over the One Day International (ODI) nation in the ACC Premier League match at the Selangor Turf Club in Kuala Lumpur today.

The four-wicket win against the UAE, who earned the ODI status from the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in New Zealand earlier this year, was the only second victory for Nepal in their nine meetings. Nepal had defeated the UAE in the group-stage match of the ACC Trophy Elite last year before the two teams shared the trophy after the match ended in a tie.

Nepal had the privilege of beating the UAE, USA and Hong Kong previously when they temporarily held the ODI status. But this time, Nepal managed to defeat the ODI nation proper and take a sweet revenge of the World Cup Qualifiers loss. Nepal restricted the UAE to 191 in 48.1 overs after skipper Paras Khadka won the toss and elected to field. In reply, Nepal reached 195-6.

Chasing a modest target, Nepal could not make a desired start and lost Naresh Budhayer — who was paired with Subash Khakurel in coach Pubudu Dassanayake’s yet another trial in the opening – with just six runs on the board. Gyanendra Malla joined Khakurel at the centre and the pair added 66 runs before the vice-captain was trapped leg before by Fayyaz Ahmed. Gyanendra scored a quick fire 47 off just 37 balls hitting seven fours and a six.

Skipper Khadka and Khakurel then took the match away from the UAE with a 59-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Khakurel top scored for Nepal with 91-ball 71 that included 11 boundaries, while Khadka struck three fours in his 40-ball 30. Sharad Vesawkar scored 16 off 27 before he was run out, while Alam hit a four in his 16-ball five. Binod Bhandari (nine) and Basanta Regmi (eight) completed the formality as Nepal chased the down the target with 61 balls to spare.

Earlier, Som Pal Kami and Mehboob Alam gave Nepal a dream start reducing the UAE to 15-2 inside first five overs that included the prized wicket of skipper Khurram Khan (naught). It soon became 37-3 when Sagar Pun dismissed Salman Faris (16).

Swapnil Patil and Shaiman Anwar added 44 runs for the fourth wicket before Shakti Gauchan had the latter caught by Sharad Vesawkar for 14 runs. Patil, who top scored with 76 runs, shared a 72-run partnership with Krishnachandran Karate for the fifth wicket to take the UAE total past 150-mark. The Nepali bowlers then wrecked havoc taking the last five wickets for just six runs.

Patil struck eight fours and two sixes in his 95-ball innings, while Karate hit two boundaries and a six in his 69-ball 36. Alam (3-21) and Kami (3-39) shared six wickets between them, while Shakti returned with 2-31 and Sagar had 1-36.

In other matches, Afghanistan (218-4) defeated Hong Kong (216) by six wickets in the match between the two ODI nations, while Oman (269-6) outplayed hosts Malaysia (195) by 72 runs.

Oman lead the points table on better Run Rate, while Nepal are second, ahead of Afghanistan in the the six-team tournament. All three teams have two points.
