‘Make alternate arrangements for reopening schools’

Lawmakers have stressed on reopening the schools by coming May 15. The Women, Children, Senior citizens and Social Welfare Committee under the Legislature-Parliament today, directed the government to come with necessary preparations for resuming the schools.

The committee had invited Secretary at the Ministry of Education Bishwa Prakash Pundit and Director General at the Department of Education Dilliram Rimal to share about the damage in the education sectors and alternative arrangements made by the government.

The committee Chair Ranju Kumari Jha urged the government to prepare alternative sheds for the schools. She also urged the government to promote curriculum related to natural disasters and its effects.

Secretary Pundit on the occasion shared that the schools would resume even by running classes in the open after May 15 even in most quake affected districts as per the government decision.

He informed the committee that as many as 16,000 school buildings were damaged while 32 teachers and 225 students were killed in the quake. The Ministry was preparing preliminary, short-term and long-term programs for reconstructing the damaged school buildings in consultation with the Ministry of Finance and donor agencies.

Meanwhile, the Lawmakers also urged the government to adjust the academic calendar and to fix the date for the examinations of grade 11 and 12 as soon as possible.

Lawmakers taking part in the meeting today were Laxman Rajbanshi, Ramhari Subedi, Dr Banshidhar Mishra, Dr Ganesh Man Gurung, Nisha Kumari Shah, Shree Maya Thakali among others. RSS
