Majority of the participants coming to attend the International Conference on Nepal’s Reconstruction have been confirmed.
Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi and Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj are attending the conference scheduled to be held on June 25, according to the Ministry of Finance. Also attending are Bangladeshi Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Norwegian Minister for International Development Heikki Eidsvoll Holmås.
Likewise, the President of Asian Development Bank, the Vice-president of World Bank and a Minister of State from Japan have confirmed their participation to the conference. A high-ranking official is also coming on behalf of the European Union.
The conference is being organized with the objective of collecting funds including soft loans and grants from the friendly countries and donor agencies, as internal resources are not enough to rebuild the physical infrastructure damaged in the April 25 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. The preparations for the conference have reached the final stage, adds the Ministry. The government had formed a committee under the convenorship of Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat to prepare for the one-day event.
Also confirming their participation as of today are Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, China, Denmark, the UK, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Norway, Saudi Fund for Development, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Netherlands, the USA, Poland, India and New Zealand.
Malaysia, Qatar, Afghanistan, Canada, Czech Republic, Indonesia, Kuwati Fund for Arab Economic Development, Luxembourg, Maldives, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Turkey, UAE among others are likely to confirm their participation within a day or two.
Bilateral and multilateral agencies like the European Union, International Monetary Fund, International Organization of Migration, the UN Women, United Nations Development Program, United Nations Economic, Social and Culture Organization, United Nations Fund for Population Activities, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNICEF, UN Habitat, World Health Organization, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization have confirmed their delegates taking part in the conference.
After the inauguration of the conference by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, a documentary sharing about the situation of the country including photos of the major tourism sites of the country before and after quake will be screened. Attempts would be made to collect suggestions of donors by presenting an action plan. The government has already made arrangement of food and accommodation as well as security to the guests.
Similarly, JICA, USAID, KOICA and other international agencies have also confirmed their participation in the conference. The government had invited 37 nations and 23 bilateral donor agencies as well as high-rank officials for their participation in the conference.
Former President of the United States of America Jimmy Carter, Hollywood actor Leonardo Dicaprio and British Actress Joanna Lumley too have confirmed their participation in the conference. According to the Ministry, a total of 300 people from Nepal and foreign countries would attend the one-day conference.
Disseminating the message that main tourism sites of the country and their physical infrastructures are safe from quake is another objective of the conference. According to the Finance Ministry, participants of the conference will also visit historical infrastructures, shrines enlisted in the list of world’s heritage list and some quake-hit areas.
A Post Disaster Need Assessment (PDNA) report, to be presented before the donor agencies, has already been prepared. The government has today introduced the Ordinance related to reconstruction to form the high-level reconstruction authority in order to take the donor agencies into confidence. RSS
