Govt warns of stern action against distributors of substandard rice

The government on Sunday warned of taking ‘sternest possible action’ against the offender if the rice distributed by the World Food Programme (WFP) to the earthquake victims is found to be of substandard quality.

Cabinet Secretary Shantaraj Subedi today held discussions with the stakeholder agencies and directed them to immediately test the samples of food and beverage and take sternest possible action if found inedible or of sub-standard quality.

The government has directed Department of Commerce and Food Technology and Quality Control Department submit a report within three days to the Cabinet office after conducting tests on the samples of foods distributed to Gorkha and Dhading among other places by various organisations including WFP. He also directed to take necessary action against those found guilty of supplying substandard food as per the existing laws.
