Govt directed to close Bagdol-based asphalt plant

A parliamentary committee (PC) has directed the government to close down an asphalt plant based in Bagdol of Lalitpur, citing environmental pollution in the adjoining human settlements.

The Environment Protection Committee of the Legislature Parliament has instructed the government to immediately shut down the plant registered in the name of Nepal Adarsha Construction Company Private Ltd. In a meeting of the Committee today, the lawmakers said although the plant has to be used as a mobile equipment as per the necessity of time, it has been operating from the same place for a long time, violating laws.

The meeting has agreed to direct the government to ensure the closure of the plant immediately bearing in mind its adverse impact on the environment and on public health. In the meeting, Chief Secretary Leelamani Poudyal said none is allowed to go against the law and directed the ministry concerned to go for legal action against the plant.

However, plant proprietor Birendra Pandey claimed that the equipment that bad been at Dallu in course of the construction of Bishnumati link road and was shifted to Bagdol during the 18th SAARC summit.

It is learnt that the Department of Industry had fined the plant Rs 50,000 for not following set conditions.

There are some 15 to 20 asphalt plants across the country and five are in operation in the Kathmandu Valley alone. RSS
