Property worth millions of rupees has been reduced to rubble when a fire broke out at the 700-year-old Laprang Monastery located at Samagaun VDC in northern Gorkha on Monday night. The monastery has a historical importance.
A local Mingmar Chhiring Lama said the fire completely destroyed the monastery.
The incident took place when the traditional Nepali kerosene lamp (tuki) lit inside the monastery fell down.
Locals came to know about the incident only at around 3:00 am today though the fire started at around 11:00 pm yesterday.
Lama said idols of Lord Buddha, silver coins, cash, diamond and clothes among others were gutted in the incident.
Similarly, more than one dozen books related to Buddhism also turned into ashes. The incident site is some 166 kilometres far from the district headquarters.
According to Inspector Deepak Shrestha of the District Police Office, details of the property engulfed in the fire are yet to be ascertained.
