Dr KC puts off his hunger strike for two weeks

Senior orthopaedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) Dr Govinda KC has decided to postpone his plan to stage another round of fast-unto-death for two weeks.

Dr KC took the decision to this effect after a committee chaired by National Planning Commission member Yagya Bahadur Karki met him and assured that they are developing an action plan for the implementation of Health Profession Education Policy prepared by Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led committee.

Earlier, the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led committee had submitted a report to Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on June 29, making a slew of recommendations, including establishing medical colleges only outside Kathmandu Valley, setting the MBBS fee ceiling to Rs 3.5 million and limiting the numbers of students to be admitted to 100, among others.

Dr KC was all set to resort to the sixth round of his hunger strike from this afternoon demanding implementation of past agreements made to bring reforms in medical education.
