Dahal says he’s asked Nembang to put off CA for 10 days

UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has warned of sterner protest from the opposition parties if the Constituent Assembly chairman one-sidedly formed the Questionnaire Committee in tomorrow’s CA meeting.

Talking to a group of journalists, led by the Reporters Club, that went to meet him today, Dahal said that the country would badly get mired in crisis and the whole nation, not just only the CA, would be polarised and segmented.

Mentioning that he met CA Chairman Subas Chandra Nembang today, Dahal, who lead the alliance of opposition parties, said he told the latter that there was no other alternative than consensus.

According to him, he asked Nembang to postpone the CA meeting for 10 more days and take an initiative to build an environment of consensus among political parties.

Now, it would not matter much even if the promulgation of constitution is delayed by a couple of months, he argued, as the January 22 deadline was missed.

“CA chairman has special authority. He can use that authority to postpone the CA meeting in order to lead the country to negotiation and consensus,” he said.

Dahal, however, claimed that the CA chairman did not have right to propose formation of any committee on his own, without the CA’s consent.

The opposition parties have been protesting the formation of Questionnaire Committee and obstructing the CA proceedings, arguing that the CA should forge consensus on crucial issues of constitution instead of taking up voting process.
