Minister for Information and Communications, Dr Minendra Rijal, has said Nepal government is committed to creating environment for unchecked exercising and practice of press freedom.
In a message of best wishes on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day-May 3- today, Minister Dr Rijal said the government is of the view that protection and promotion of press freedom is essential, for it is a pillar of democracy.
Saying that only responsible and accountable practice of journalism can boost press freedom, Minister Dr Rijal requested Nepali press to be sensitive towards it.
“I remind and revere the contribution of the journalists who lost their lives at various difficult moments while practicing and protecting press freedom and freedom of expression in the country,” he said in the message.
Referring to the UNESCO setting of the slogan of ‘Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post-2015 Development Agenda’, for this year, Minister Dr Rijal, who is also the Spokesperson of the government, said freedom of press and media is essential not only to promote political and civic freedom but also for successful economic, social and cultural campaigns and ensuring prosperity in the country.
He further said development and freedom are complementary, and hence press freedom needs to prevail to achieve development goals.
