Chinese held while trying to smuggle illegal currencies in unusual modus operandi

A Chinese national has been arrested while trying to smuggle illegal foreign currencies to China, from the Tribhuvan International Airport on Thursday.

According to TIA Police, Yi Wang (39) was detained with USD 74,000, Euro 76,000, Chinese Yuan 20,048 and Swiss Franc 48,000.

He had hidden some currencies rolling them into cigarettes while some other notes were under the sole of his slippers.

DIG Bijaya Lal Kayastha, Chief of the TIA Police, said Wang was the first person to have been nabbed while using such a modus operandi to smuggle foreign currencies.

Wang was about to board a China Air flight 408 to Lhasa while police had checked and nabbed him.

Police also recovered a laptop and a mobile set from him.

Police added that his passport details show that Wang had frequently visited Nepal in the past four years. Wang had landed in Nepal on August 15 and was residing in a Thamel-based guesthouse, they added.

Police are looking into the case.
