Children have written a letter to the Constituent Assembly (CA) members, seeking guarantee of their rights in a new constitution.
Child Workers in Nepal Concerned Center (CWIN Nepal), an NGO working in the sector of child rights, submitted a letter to a CA committee here today.
Receiving the letter, Chairman of the Constitution Archive Study and Determination Committee Bishnu Poudel pledged the guarantee of child rights in the new constitution.
Ranju Kumari Jha, Chairperson of Women, Children, Senior Citizens and Social Welfare Committee of the Legislature-Parliament, called for ending the social discrimination against girls first to ensure the rights of children in the constitution. “The Nepali society gives more preference to male children than female and the change in this mindset is necessary from the family itself,”Jha added. There is no doubt over the guarantee of child rights when girls and boys are treated equally, she said.
CWIN’s President Madhav Pradhan shared that 12,000 child representatives from 18 districts across the country have sent letters to the CA members, seeking guarantee of their rights in a new constitution.
Children of remote parts of the country have still been deprived of basic education, the children from the Valley schools wrote to the CA members. The state should ensure free education and health facilities to children and no child be discriminated on any grounds, they stressed.
