Call for retaining Western Development Region as province

Most of the lawmakers representing the Western Development Region have stressed that their region as a whole should be included in a single province when the country goes into a federal setup.

At a gathering held at Parliamentary Party Office of the Nepali Congress (NC) on Tuesday, they said that the region should not be split as it has both capability and identity.

They stressed that the region should not be split as it is a province having immense possibility and historical, religious and economic significance as Lumbini, Muktinath and Pokhara in the region.

Vice-president of the Nepali Congress, Ram Chandra Poudel, said that it would be a prosperous province of the country if the western development region would be a single province.

He said, “Some bordering districts with western region can be included. We welcome if they agree. But the western region should not be disintegrated.”

Supporting NC Vice-President, NC leader Gopalman Shrestha said, “Let’s be determined to not allow split of the western region.”

Deputy General Secretary of the CPN-UML, Bishnu Prasad Poudel, said they have been demanding that the western region should not be split as people have wanted so.

“There is possibility of making western region a single province by including some other districts”, said Poudel.

UCPN (Maoist) Secretary Top Bahadur Rayamajhi said there would be no dissatisfaction while making the western region integrated except some districts. There would be no matter what will be its name, he added.

On the occasion, Shankar Bhandari, Dhan Raj Gurung among others stressed the that five development regions should be made five provinces in course of federalism while Abdul Razak, Shivaram Thapa, among others expressed their different opinion. RSS
