The Urban Development Ministry has stopped distribution of tents to 601 lawmakers following direction from Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Chandra Nembang.
Urban Ministry had decided to distribute two tents each to the lawmakers following the Great Quake on April 25 and a major aftershock on May 12.
Lawmakers were receiving the tents inside the CA hall. Nembang immediately asked to halt the distribution after some lawmakers criticised lawmakers for receiving the tents at times when quake-affected people were deprived of one.
UML lawmaker Bhim Rawal, who was among other lawmakers to refuse the tents, drew the attention of the CA chairman and had asked to stop its distribution to lawmakers.
“Tents which should be given to the common people were brought inside the CA. We immediately objected to it. This is a wrong decision. Citizens should receive relief materials first,” Rawal said.
CA Secretariat Assistant Spokesperson Sudarshan Kuinkel also informed that the CA Chairman immediately halted the distribution after being notified by a section of lawmakers. However, a handful of lawmakers had already taken the tents, according to sources.
