3 held for ‘robbing’ foreign trekkers

Metropolitan Police Circle Office, Bauddha on Wednesday arrested a gang of three involved in targeting and robbing foreign tourists in the Sundarijal-Chisapani trekking route in Kathmandu district.

Those arrested have been identified as Binduram Tamang, 22, Anil Tamang, 21, and Bijaya Tamang, 23, all three from Talakhu-2 of Nuwakot district. Following complaint by two US-based tourists who were allegedy robbed while trekking along the route, police were able to arrest the three from the same village after 67 days of the incident. Two others are absconding, police said.

Carolyn Dowty, 62, bearing US passport (231119699) and Linda Richter, 60, bearing US passport (05887789) were allegedly robbed in the area on March 2. According to DSP Shyam Chaudhary, the chief of Bauddha police, the gang would target tourists who are by themselves and not travelling in group.

Of the three, Binduram, who runs a meat shop at Chishapani of Nuwakot would keep watch on tourists trekking solo or who are aged and weak and rob them, police said. Other four would waylay the tourists and rob them, DSP Chaudhary said.

Police were able to nab the three after they intensified search when the gang robbed an Israeli tourist along the same route on April 16. They had robbed USD 500, Rs 13,000, and a backpack containing clothes and important documents from the Israeli.

According to Kul Prasad Dhital, a local tourism entrepreneur who had managed the trekking package for the two US tourists, said this is the first case of arrest of robbers. Over the last few years, over 25 tourists have been either robbed or attacked along the same route but none had been arrested, according to Dhital.

The arrested have been remanded to police custody. Police said they could face up to nine years in jail plus fines.
