PROBLEM TO ADDRESS
Littering is a serious problem in both urban and rural areas throughout Nepal. A lack of public awareness coupled with a belief that clearing waste from public spaces is the responsibility of the government has resulted in this widespread issue. Such waste, found in abundance on roads, streets and open spaces, generally consists of plastics (e.g., bags, noodle and chocolate wrappers, PET bottles), glass bottles, cigarette butts, and organic waste (e.g., orange peels, peanut shells, etc.). This litter finds its way into storm-water drains resulting in clogs as well as waterways such as rivers, creeks and streams. They are also unsightly, a public nuisance and health risk as they can lead to the breeding of vermin and transfer of diseases (ADB 2013). Despite such adverse effects on our public health, little has been done to-date to address this issue in a concerted, systematic manner.
1. Raise awareness about a no-littering culture in Kathmandu.
This will be undertaken by mobilizing Clean up Nepal volunteers, their immediate networks as well as other like-minded individuals and organisation to conduct an action-oriented weekly cleanup at Tudikhel. This is based on the idea of action leading to awareness. The cleanup itself by volunteers is insufficient and will not create the desired behavioral change. In order to achieve this, trained volunteer will actively engage with users of the park during the cleanup. Educational materials will also be developed for this purpose.
2. Mobilize citizens to clean the grounds consistently on a weekly basis.
Although initially it is anticipated that the volunteers participating in the weekly clean-ups will be from Clean up Nepal, the idea is to encourage other like-minded individuals and organisations to also take part. This will spread the learning and encourage active collaboration.
3. Develop a waste management plan for Tudikhel that incorporates waste segregation, provision of public bins and the development of a culture of no-littering.
Clean-ups on a weekly basis is the start to understand littering issues at Tudikhel and to work towards developing a waste management plan for Tudikhel that is a result of interaction with the public and key stakeholders such as Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). For this, Clean up Nepal will liaise with KMC from the outset of the project.
HOW WILL WE DO THIS?
The Tudikhel weekly cleanup and awareness raising campaign consists of three major components:
1. Development of educational resources
2. Training volunteers to engage directly with park users
3. Liaise with like-minded individuals and organisations to participate in weekly cleanups.
1. Development of educational resources
The resources will consist of:
• A dialogue sheet in both English and Nepali which highlights possible ways of greeting park users and relaying information about littering, its impact and how each citizen can play their part to ameliorate this issue.
• An infographic that highlights statistics on waste generated in Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the challenges faced to remove this waste on a daily basis.
• Some examples of anti-littering campaigns from throughout the world and success stories of citizens joining hands to address the issue (preferably pictorial, in color).
All resources should be attractive, easily understood by the general public, in color and laminated such that they can be used every week.
2. Training for volunteers to engage with park users
Clean up Nepal will train 12 volunteers to engage with park users on a weekly basis. The two hour training will consist of the following components:
• Clean up Nepal – Who are we? | Our Vision | Our Working Approach | Programs (15 minutes)
• Techniques to engage with the general public – What to say and how to say it | Choosing English or Nepali
• Content for engagement – What is littering? How does it impact us? What can we do to stop this widespread problem?
3. Liaise with like-minded individuals and organisations to participate in weekly clean-ups
Clean up Nepal will spread the word on this Trash-free Tudikhel project through social media and its website.
The anticipated impact of this weekly cleanup at Tudikhel and awareness raising campaign are listed as follows:
1. The creation of a pool of at least 500 interested individuals and 50 organisations wanting to engage with the issue of littering.
2. The training of 12 Clean up Nepal volunteers to engage with the community by providing them the needed skills and knowledge.
3. The creation of a cleaner Tudikhel that is visibly litter-free. Document this process through weekly photographs of 10 strategic spots at Tudikhel taken each week.
4. Documentation of the waste collected from Tudikhel systematically to understand the types and composition of waste, and monitor changes.
5. Segregation of waste collected and the commencement of a composting process for organic matter.
6. Documentation of efforts made and ideas generated by Clean up Nepal and other participating individuals and organisations, both via discussions and action-oriented clean-ups, to develop an understanding of the waste management issues at Tudikhel and brainstorm what steps can be taken to address them.
7. Provide significant input towards the development of a Waste Management Plan for Tudikhel.
8. Awareness raised of the Tudikhel case through the Clean up Nepal website, social media, newspaper articles and radio interviews. Engage high-profile individuals, artists and media personalities to lend support to this cause.
ANNUAL PROJECT COSTS
A very conservative estimate places the cost to run this program for a year at NRs. 176 500. If you know of any agencies that would be interested in funding this, please let us know.
