Prior to this, the week of French language is taking place at AFK with several activities: games, a karaoke contest, a round table and films screenings. Everybody, Francophone (French speakers) and Francophiles (French lovers) are invited to take part in this event… even the others can join us and celebrate. MONDAY, 16 MARCH 5:45 PM : Un homme qui crie/ Screaming man (film from Tchad) By Mahamat-Saleh Haroun / drama Adam, sixty something, a former swimming champion, is pool attendant at a smart N’Djamena hotel. When the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give up his job to his son Abdel. Terribly resentful, he feels socially humiliated. The country is in the throes of a civil war. Rebel forces are attacking the government. The authorities demand that the population contribute to the ”war effort”, giving money or volunteers old enough to fight off the assailants. TUESDAY, 17 MARCH From 10 AM : Pétanque challenge (Prize : Pastis bottle) (French kind of lawn bowling) 17:45 PM : Aya de Yopougon (Film from Ivory Coast) By Marguerite Abouet/ animation Aya, a beautiful 19-year-old Ivorian who lives in Yopougon, a working-class neighbourhood of Abidjan in the 1970s. A serious young woman who has ambitions to become a doctor, she is in total contrast to her two friends, Adjoua and Bintou who to her dismay, do extremely well in the categories : Hairstyles, Fashion and Husband hunting. The two girls, go dancing in the ”bush”, venture out to the dance halls, taking life easily, until the day that Adjoua, who is not married, finds out that she is pregnant. WEDNESDAY, 18 MARCH 3:30 PM : Karaoke contest Our French Karaoke contest is coming back! Anybody between 7 and 77 years old can participate either to compete or to have fun.
